Roadmap to Healthy Foods In Schools

I am so impressed with the school lunch program at the Appleton Alternative High School in Appleton, Wisconsin. With the help of Natural Ovens Bakery in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, this school transformed the lunch program from a typical unhealthy school lunch program to a shining example of healthy foods. The school reaped the benefits of happier, healthier, and more productive students. A Different Kind of School Lunch

How to Change to Nutritional Fresh Whole Foods in Schools

The first section of this book offers information and materials to help parents and community members decide what type of nutritional environment they would like to see at their schools. There are examples of goals that can be set for nutritional changes and outcomes to help parents and teachers measure the benefits of good nutrition in their school lunch programs. This section also has examples of nutrition policies, and even sample menus.

Model Materials and References

This section contains sample letters, flyers, health screening tests, talking points, and even information for fund-raising events. Through out the book there are great ideas and projects that could be used for teaching good nutrition to children. A DVD accompanies the book and covers the six years of nutritional change at Appleton Alternative High School.

An Excellent Resource

If you are concerned about the junk in our kids' schools, then this book and DVD are great resources and guides for making changes. It is often difficult to get school systems to change, but with the rise of childhood obesity and diseases like diabetes, we need to convince our schools to make these changes so our kids have a better chance at good health and better learning.
