This nutritional assessment involves a late night snack at White Castle. White Castle was the first hamburger chain and White Castle restaurants have been serving Slyders for over 80 years. Slyders are little hamburgers served with onions and pickles. Other menu items include fish sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, onion chips, french fries, chicken rings and cheese sticks.

A High Calorie Snack

This late night snack consists of two Slyders with cheese, an order of onion chips, and a chocolate shake. These burgers are small and can fit in the palm of your hand, so it isn't unusual to see a person wolf down five or six during one meal.

Nutritional Assessment

Each little cheeseburger has about 150 calories. The deep fried onion chips contain approximately 400 calories. So far, that is 700 calories. Half of these calories come from fat. The thick chocolate shake contains 250 calories, more fat and lots of sugar. This brings the calorie total to 950. A huge amount of calories for a little snack. This snack also has about 1200 mg of sodium, which is about half of what an adult should consume in one day. The cheese adds a little bit of calcium, and you can meet a small part of your RDA for iron, but that is the extent of the nutrition.

How Bad is the Nutrition?

These tasty, popular little burgers and onion chips offer very little nutrition and a lot of calories, with way too many of those calories are from fat. The onion chips, like all of the sides, are deep fried, which makes them downright unhealthy.

Can this Meal be Saved?

Most fast food joints offer salads or something a little healthier than greasy burgers and deep fried foods. White Castle does not. The french fries would have less calories than the onion chips since they aren't coated in a batter, but still would have a lot of unhealthy fat. Water could be a substitute for the shake. This snack would now contain about 400 calories, but still no good nutrition. It looks like White Castle foods should be enjoyed only as a rare treat.
