Fast Food Dining
Eating fast food is not the best way to find good nutrition, but sometimes we find ourselves in this dilemma: on the go, in a hurry, with hungry kids. No fast food restaurant can replace a healthy home-cooked meal, but a Subway Kids' Pak is one of the best fast food choices.Turkey Sandwich Kids Meal
For this review, I chose a Kids' Pak that includes a turkey sandwich, Fruit Roll-Ups, and a Minute Maid 100% Juice Fruit Punch. The sandwich includes a white deli roll, turkey slices, two small slices of cheddar cheese, light mayonnaise, lettuce, and tomato.Nutrition
The sandwich probably contains around 275 to 300 calories, with about 100 of those from fat. The turkey is a good source of protein and iron and the tomato adds a bit of vitamin value. The Minute Maid single serving juice box is a good source for vitamin C and has some calcium. Although it doesn't contain any added sugar, it has around 100 calories, all from the natural sugar in the fruit juices.
The Fruit Roll-Ups has about 50 calories, adds a little vitamin C, and contains corn syrup as a sweetener.
Bottom Line
Even with the light mayonnaise and cheese, this kids' meal has less fat than other fast food meals. It doesn't really add a lot of nutrition except for the vitamin C, but you have the option of choosing fresh vegetable ingredients to boost the nutrition of the sandwich. A whole grain sandwich roll would add more nutrition and fiber than the white deli roll. Fruit juice is a better choice than a soda, but water would be even better. The fruit snack doesn't add much either, but it is a much better choice than a cookie or greasy french fries that come with other brands of kids' meals. The Subway Kids' Pak isn't perfect nutrition, but it is a big step in the right direction for improving the quality of fast food kids' meals.
