Definition: Building blocks of protein that must come from the diet because they cannot be manufactured by the body. The essential amino acids are:
  • histidine
  • isoleucine
  • leucine
  • lysine
  • methionine
  • phenylalanine
  • threonine
  • tryptophan
  • valine
