Step One - Begin the Search for Your Food Item

When you open up the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference program you will be greeted with an introductory splash screen that will open up into a search screen that has three open fields. Type up to five words describing the food you are researching into the top Enter Search Term field and click on the "Find" button. The database usually has many results for the food you type into this field.

In my example here, I am searching for nutritional information about a baked potato with the skin. I typed the word "potato" in the Enter Search Term field which should bring up many possible results. I could have used the term "baked potato" instead, which would give me fewer results to choose from in the next step.
