Soy is a great source of protein and soy isoflavones. Soy isoflavones can have marvelous affects on our hearts, our hormones and may even help to prevent cancer. Two well known ways to get soy in your diet are by drinking soy milk and eating tofu. While soy milk and tofu are tasty foods, it would be nice to add soy to your diet in other ways, especially for people who don't really like the heavier taste of soy. Crum Creek Mills does just that with a line of products that contain soy protein.

Crum Creek Mills Soy Nuts

Crum Creek offers pasta, baking mixes, and snacks that all contain soy as an ingredient. The first product I tested was a package of The Brilliantly Blended Soy Nut Mix. This tasty snack includes soy nuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, raisins, and even a few little chocolate chips. This blend of soy nuts and seeds really is a great source of protein, omega-3 essential fatty acids, and fiber.

Not only is this soy nut mix super-healthy, it really tastes great, too. The crunch of the soy nuts and seeds is perfect with the light sweetness of the little raisins and tiny chocolate chips. One serving has just 103 calories and would make a great afternoon snack. I love to see really healthy snacks that taste this great.

Crum Creek Mills Muffin Mixes

The next Crum Creek item I tried was the Crum Creek Mills Blueberry Muffin Mix. The blueberry muffin mix is made from regular wheat flour, barley flour, soy protein plus other ingredients. I wasn't expecting many actual blueberries since dry blueberry muffin mixes usually don't have too many blueberries, and many just have little blue clumps of sugar instead. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the muffin mix package, emptied the mix into a mixing bowl, and saw that it was full of blueberries.

The instructions for the muffin mix were very easy to follow and required the addition of an egg and some oil. Crum Creek suggests canola oil, which is a great suggestion since canola oil contains lots of omega-3 fatty acids and it is also a great oil for cooking. The muffins were easy to bake and turned a beautiful golden brown in just a few minutes.

Once the blueberry muffins had cooled, it was time for the taste test and these muffins passed with flying colors. The muffins had a great texture, and a great flavor with lots of blueberries. These muffins are great the way they are, however you can turn these muffins into super healthy breakfast muffins but using canola oil, and by adding a few pecans or walnuts before you bake them.

Other Crum Creek Mills Soy Foods

I also tried some of the pasta and the soy bites. The pasta was tasty with fewer carbohydrates than regular flour. The soy in the pasta adds soy isoflavones and proteins which are good for health. Plus, the extra protein means less of a blood sugar spike after dinner compared to eating regular white-flour pasta. The different types of pasta will accommodate your favorite pastas sauces nicely.

The soy bites are little bite-size snacks that look and taste like little breadsticks. They are tasty and crunch, and would make a much better snack than potato chips or tortilla chips. The different flavors include Rosemary and Garlic, Superb Sesame, and Outrageous Onion.

Crum Creek Mills also have soy protein pancake mix, soy protein powders, and soy protein breadsticks. All of these snacks, pastas, and mixes are great ways to get extra soy protein and isoflavones into your diet without the heavy soy taste.

Why is Soy Good for You?

Soy is an excellent source of proteins and isoflavones. Here's how soy can benefit you:
  • Soy is a complete protein source without all the unhealthy saturated fats that are found in meat.
  • Soy has been shown to help ease menopause symptoms.
  • Soy helps to reduce LDL cholesterol (the bad stuff) and increases HDL cholesterol (the good stuff).
  • Soy is rich in calcium, iron, zinc, and B vitamins.
