Kids snacks need to be healthy, fun, and they need to taste great. Fresh fruits, nuts, and vegetables are the best choices, but sometimes a kids' snack that is a little more fun might be in order. That has always meant greasy chips, high calorie candy, or high-fat crackers made with poor quality processed flours. Now parents who want to indulge in fun kids' snacks have three healthier options thanks to Nabisco.

Healthier Snacks

Nabisco has recently created KidSense kids' snacks which are healthier versions of Nabisco favorites - Teddy Grahams, Cheese Nips Sport Crisps, and Smilin' Ritz Bits. These kids' snacks have all been reformulated and packaged into single serving bags, with just 100 calories per serving. Here are the healthy new changes per serving:
  • Three grams of whole grain
  • No artificial flavors or sweeteners
  • Zero grams of trans fat
  • Three grams of total fat with little or no saturated fat

How Do They Taste?

The Cheese Nips and Smilin' Ritz Bits are crispier than the previous Nabisco kids' snack versions, but they still maintain their flavor. In fact, they may even taste a bit better, with a their lighter, crisper texture. The Teddy Grahams are OK, but not as sweet as the regular version. If your child is big on sugary snacks, it may take a while to get used to the flavor.

Are They a Good Value?

These little snacks are set to be priced at $2.69 per box of six snack bags. For kids who tend to over-eat, I think the cost of individually packaged snacks is worth the extra money. These single serving packages may help kids understand how big a between-meal snack really should be. These kid' snack packages would also make nice, easy additions to packed lunches with a sandwich on whole grain bread, a piece of fruit, and milk or juice.

While fresh fruits, vegetables, and nuts are the best choices for kids' snacks, I think that Nabisco has given a great option for parents who want to offer their children healthy and tasty kids' snacks. The ingredients are healthier, they still taste great, and I hope that other food companies will follow suit with similar healthier snacks.
