Question: Does shrimp scampi have a lot of carbs?
Does shrimp have a lot of carbs? Maybe I should just ask, how many carbs does a serving of shrimp scampi have? I was invited to Red Lobster for an "All You Can Eat Shrimp," but I was wondering if I could have that meal or not.

Answer: Shrimp contains virtually no carbohydrates. Shrimp scampi is basically shrimp baked in butter and garlic so it won't have any carbohydrates either, unless breaded shrimp is used in the recipe, then there will be some carbohydrates. Red Lobster doesn't offer any nutrition information for their shrimp scampi, however one serving of shrimp scampi (about eight shrimp) typically has over 300 calories, with over 75% of those calories coming from the fats in butter, which means lots of saturated fats that aren't good for you.

Since you are asking about carbohydrates, I will assume that you want to know if you can eat shrimp scampi on a low-carb diet. Since there are no carbohydrates in shrimp scampi made with unbreaded shrimp, it does technically fit into a low carbohydrate diet. The problem is that shrimp scampi is very high in fat and calories so if you are eating "all you can eat," you will be taking in a lot of calories and saturated fat if you eat two, three or more servings of shrimp scampi.

While eating one or two pieces of shrimp from a dish of shrimp scampi as an appetizer might be nice, eating a whole plateful of shrimp scampi as a meal really isn't a healthy idea. Unfortunately all of the shrimp dishes offered from the Red Lobster's Endless ShrimpTM menu special all are high in fat and calories. A better shrimp choice would be the shrimp cocktail dinner or grilled shrimp from Red Lobster's Lighthouse SelectionsTM menu, both of which would be lower in fat and calories.
