Healthy Eating and Travel

Are you planning any road trips for any upcoming Spring Breaks? When you're on the road, it may seem like healthy food is difficult to find and that you're doomed to eat junk food until you reach your destination. But that doesn't have to be the case; you can find healthy foods while you're traveling if you know where to look.

Many convenience stores offer fresh fruit (you just need to search beyond the greasy chips and candy bars that are usually displayed prominently). You might want to pack a small cooler with fresh snacks and beverages that you have at home. This also saves you money since many things at the convenience stores are a little more expensive than what you already bought at the grocery store. Here are some more of my tips for healthy eating when you travel.

Something you have to be really careful about when traveling is how much caffeine you ingest. Caffeine is in everything these days, as every manufacturer of food and drink products is infusing their products with caffeine. Most people have no idea of just how much caffeine they consume daily. It’s in everything from coffee and energy drinks to over-the-counter cold medications, chewing gum and chocolate, potato chips and even popcorn. And when on-the-road, we all eat a lot more of this stuff than at home.

Talk about being on the road a lot — remember rock star Dave Grohl of Them Crooked Vulure and Foo Fighters? He was hospitalized with a coffee overdose!

Drink water – plain tap water. You can carry it with you in plastic bottles – the sort you buy water in (for a higher price than milk).
Take plenty of fruit, especially easy to peel small oranges, and grapes. Remember a bag for peel, cores etc.
