Infants and Overdosing Vitamin D

By , About.com GuideJune 16, 2010

Follow me on:

Kids need vitamin D and parents often give liquid vitamin D to their babies. The FDA has issued a warning about the risk of giving babies too much vitamin D, which can happen if you use the dropper or don't measure the dose properly. Vitamin D can become toxic in large amounts. It's always a good idea to speak with a health care provider before giving your baby any supplements and always follow the dosing directions on the label.

For many years it was common practice in Finland for babies to receive 2000iu vitamin D3 daily.
During that time there were no reports of toxicity. See this paper.

Intake of vitamin D and risk of type 1 diabetes

There were no reports of adverse events. What did result was that Type 1 Diabetes incidence was reduced over the next 30yrs by 80%.

Ideally of course babies should get Vitamin D3 replete breast milk directly from their mother. The free full text online paper here

Just went to hear Dr. Sears speak about Vitamin D deficiencies in children these days and he suggested high doses on Vit D to get children back up to normal levels. Like 1000 units of Vit. D per day for kids for six months. He said no longer than six months. He wasn’t talking about newborns though so I can’t comment about that.
