Childhood Obesity Is All Mom's Fault?

A study in the UK suggests childhood obesity might be tied to mom's employment. According to the researchers, children whose mothers worked full time were more likely to be obese. I assume by working full time they mean outside the home. I think a lot of moms who stay home will tell you that it is full time work, but anyway...

Unfortunately the study didn't look at what any of the kids were actually eating. Maybe it would be good to get that information first, before blaming mothers with other full time jobs.

In a perfect world one parent could stay home with the kids, but two-incomes are necessary for many families to get by. And single parents have to work to support their kids. So tell me what you think? If you're a working parent how do you make sure your kids eat healthy foods?

I am a single working parent. My daughter and I eat breakfast and dinner together and I send a home lunch (she doesn’t like the food they serve at school). Taking a little time for meals and making sure there are a variety of things to snack on (both fun and healthy) make it possible to eat well. I think for us, making sure my daughter is getting enough daily activity is more challenging than the food part…

Childhood obesity is preventable, as are many of its effects. Following simple guidelines, such as 5-2-1-0 (5 servings of fruits & vegetables a day, 2 hours or less of television time, 1 hour or more of physical activity, and 0 sweetened beverages) can dramatically improve health and wellness for at-risk children not only in the short term, but as they grow into adults. Sharing information on how to loosen the grip of obesity on America’s youth is a pivotal step in reclaiming our health as a nation.
