Bitter Taste Blocking Chemical - Cool or Creepy?

By , About.com GuideMay 28, 2010

Follow me on:

Scientists have created a chemical that blocks bitter flavors in humans. This brings up the possibility of someday adding bitter-blocking chemicals to artificial sweeteners to make them more palatable. Hmmm...

I'm guessing people who use artificial sweeteners might appreciate the addition of such a chemical, and people who don't like artificial sweeteners will see this as adding insult to injury - one artificial chemical piled on top of another.

I don't know. I'm fine with using a little bit of non-nutritive sweetener (I prefer stevia by far), but this does seem more creepy than cool to me. Leave a comment - tell me what you think.

The way food is manufactured at industrial level – even “natural sugar” isn’t exactly people squeezing sugar cane or beets and producing wholesome goodness. Food manufacturing (not considered artificial) also involves a cornucopia of unreadable chemicals. So the idea of being averse to chemicals, while good in intent, seems not properly applied to everything we eat.

I’m one of those people who don’t really find much of distinction between sweetners or even between them and sugar. So, I’m fine without them being altered. Although, I suspect that sweetners won’t really be the only target… it’ll largely be the other wholesome goodness of manufactured food :-)

We really don’t need to add another chemical to a chemical-based product do we?
I think they’re getting carried away! We have GMO food that MIGHT be causing organ damage…and we have artificial colors to make what we’ll eat anyway, look more appetizing….and we have preservatives that will keep our packaged food fresh for a year or 2 even though we know it WILL be used up in the next couple of weeks ie: cereal packaged in boxes treated with BHT which is known to cause sterility in rats.
Where does it end? We’re poisoning our food supply!
ENOUGH chemicals!! We need to go back to natural organics and support small local farms instead of the factory farms and companies like Monsanto.

Um… artificial sweetener is ARTIFICIAL! In my opinion, anything artificial is not good for your body, so why are we trying to mask the taste so that we can consumer even more of these chemicals?
