The egg.Every year, more than 79,000 Americans fall sick with salmonellosis because they ate eggs that were contaminated with Salmonella bacteria and prepared improperly. Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration decided that egg producers will be required to follow certain preventative measures to reduce the chance of contamination.

Experts at the FDA believe this will eliminate over half the cases of this foodborne illness. That's good news, but you can reduce your risk even further if you simply follow safe egg handling procedures at home.
