How to Ruin a Healthy Breakfast
Tuesday April 28, 2009
I am always amazed at the wide variety of unhealthy breakfast foods available in grocery stores and in restaurants. Breakfast foods should be healthy but they have a tendency to be high in fats and sugar. Or, just as bad, a lot of people skip breakfast completely, thinking it will help them lose weight. We always hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so why ruin a healthy breakfast?Photo © Sally Hamilton

Hi there,
What about fat ruins a breakfast? High fat foods have become a staple of my diet recently and I’ve never felt better. Also, skipping breakfast is only detrimental if one skips breakfast and then binges on unhealthy foods later. Intermittent fasting recommends long periods of time without food (ie. feeding window between 12:00 and 6:00) and people see amazing weight loss and performance results on it.
Thanks for your comments, Jordan. Saturated fats have been shown time and time again to increase cholesterol and inflammation of the arteries. Trans fats are even worse. There certainly are good fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids (which I mentioned in the article) and monounsaturated fats. People who eat high fat diets also tend to have trouble sleeping.
There are several studies showing people who eat breakfast have an easier time maintaining weight and have better cognitive function in the morning, especially children.
Thanks for the tip on eggs with Omega-3’s…My husband and I have recently started trying to get more of it into our diets, and it seems like eggs would be a great way to add it in addition to our ground flaxseed.
