Salmonella Warning for Alfalfa Sprouts
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told people not to eat raw alfalfa sprouts because they may be contaminated with salmonella. So far, 31 salmonella infections have been reported in Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Utah, and West Virginia.
Alfalfa sprouts are usually eaten raw, on salads or sandwiches, and simply washing them won't help. So until they find the origin of the contamination, avoid the alfalfa sprouts. Choose bean sprouts or broccoli sprouts instead, which haven't been found to be sources of the salmonella outbreak.
