Good Fish, Bad Fish

Monday October 20, 2008
swordfishI like fish and most seafood in general. Fish is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, especially the oily ocean fish like tuna and salmon.

The American Heart Association urges almost everyone to eat at least two servings of fish each week. I think that is a great idea for must of us, however, there may be times when it isn't such a good idea to eat too much fish. I thought I was part of a majority of people who didn’t like seafood. I do know that eating natural fish isn’t a good idea when pregnant because of the mercury that can be found in it. I’ve been a healthnut for a few years now and started taking Neurovi Omega 3 a month ago which woks great!

Thanks for the information.

At least one study (details here: http://advancedmediterraneandiet.com/blog/?p=75 ) suggests that fried fish does not provide the degree of health benefits as other fish meals. Perhaps because the types of fish fried are relatively low in omega-3 fatty acids.

Mercury poisoning from eating contaminated fish is exceedingly rare in the U.S.

Note also that eating fish once or twice weekly is associated with lower rates of Alzheimer disease.

I like to keep a good trick in mind when buying fish. The smaller the fish, the further down the food train it is and therefore the less mercury it has in it. This is why chunk light tuna is better than albacore for you–smaller fish!
