Success!! Track Your Calories With a Food Diary

Tuesday July 8, 2008
Do you know how many calories you need each day to maintain your weight? Or maybe you want to lose weight slowly, safely and permanently? Some of you you want to gain weight. This Nutrition and Calorie Guide will help you calculate how many calories you need each day, plus guide you on what percentage of your diet should be made up of carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

Once you figure out how many calories you need every day, then what? Studies show that your diet will be more successful if you use a food diary. When describing a recent study, Jack Hollis Ph.D. of Kaiser-Permanente says:

"The more food records people kept, the more weight they lost. Those who kept daily food records lost twice as much weight as those who kept no records. It seems that the simple act of writing down what you eat encourages people to consume fewer calories."

A food diary can be kept by writing down everything you eat in a small notebook, or you can download and print my food diary pages. If you spend a lot of time online, you may prefer to use an online program like Calorie Count Plus. Whatever type of food diary you choose, be sure to keep track of everything you eat and drink.

Since human behavior involves selective memory process, the use of a food diary promotes a pragmatic approach to caloric intake recording. Since, I am in need of losing weight, I will use this approach in order to reduce caloric intake. Of course, a more vigorous exercise program will also be part of my weight loss program. Thank you for the suggestions…
