Mediterranean Diet

Mediterranean DietPeople who eat a Mediterranean diet tend to have a lower incidence of diseases like heart disease and cancer. This type of diet is high in fats and oils, but they are healthy fats and oils. Lots of polyunsaturated fats from fish, nuts and vegetables, monounsaturated fats from olive oil, but very little saturated fat because there isn't much red meat eaten on the Mediterranean diet.

I have lived on a diet similiar to the Med. diet for several years now. I swear by it as being the diet that nature intended for us to eat. Lots of veggies, fruits and unheated veggie oils.

According to an article published by the American Heart Association the mediterranean diet followed by the 16 countries bordering the mediterranean sea has this characteristics in common:

* high consumption of fruits, vegetables, bread and other cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds

* olive oil is an important monounsaturated fat source

* dairy products, fish and poultry are consumed in low to moderate amounts, and little red meat is eaten

* eggs are consumed zero to four times a week

* wine is consumed in low to moderate amounts
