Can Children Take Probiotics?

Tuesday May 8, 2007
Probiotic supplements help to replenish the healthy bacteria that live in your digestive tract. That's good news for people who suffer from a variety of digestive system problems like inflammatory bowel disorders. Probiotics will also help to boost your immune system function. We know that probiotics are good for adults, now find out if children can take probiotics too.

How important are dietary supplements for the health of children? A child who eats a diet with lots of fruits and vegetables, healthy protein sources and good fats probably doesn't need any extra dietary supplements. There are some times, however when giving dietary supplements to a child is a good idea:

  • Picky eaters can take multivitamins to make sure they get enough vitamins and minerals.
  • Teen age girls who don't get enough calcium can take calcium supplements.
  • Some studies suggest that children with ADHD will respond to omega-3 fatty acid supplements .
  • A child who has taken antibiotics should take a course of probiotics.
Be sure to follow the label directions on any dietary supplement you give to your children, and remember that dietary supplements are not a replacement for eating healthy foods.

It also contains prebiotics (a food source for the good bacteria). OptiBac guarantees 3 billion live micro organisms per sachet, and it does not require refrigeration. So try it out!
