Red Wine and a Longer Life
Researchers from Harvard's Harvard Medical School and the National Institute on Aging have published research findings today about a component of red wine that may help you live longer. The Harvard reseachers David Sinclair, Joseph Baur and Rafael de Cabo, studied three groups of mice. One group was fed a standard diet, a second group was fed a high calorie, high fat diet and a third group was given the same high calorie diet as the second group, however their diet was supplemented with resveratrol, a component of grape skins found in red wine. Both the second and third groups of mice became overweight due to the excess calories, however the third group, which was given the resveratrol did not develop the diabetes and liver problems that occurred in the second group of mice. The mice given resveratrol also lived longer.Read more about the Resveratrol study.
Of course, further study is needed to see how these results would relate to humans. The amount of resveratrol given to the mice was very large, much more than any person would be able to get from drinking red wine. Perhaps further study will tell us how supplemental resveratrol could help us live longer and healthier lives.
