Salmonellosis Outbreak
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has been investigating an outbreak in salmonellosis this week. Salmonellosis is an infectious disease caused by salmonella bacteria. Symptoms may include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headaches, and fever. Salmonella bacteria can be spread by a variety of ways including raw meat, poultry and eggs, however this current outbreak is apparently linked to some type of produce, possibly tomatoes. At this time no further information is available about which produce was tainted with salmonella, nor do we know which grocery stores, food suppliers or restaurants might be involved. So far the salmonellosis outbreak has been found in 18 states. The states involved are Arkansas, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont and Wisconsin. No one has died from this outbreak and few new cases have been reported. Learn more about salmonella and salmonellosis from About's First Aid Guide, Rod Brouhard.
