Portion Distortion

Thursday May 18, 2006
A lot of people are overweight or obese because we have lost the understanding of how big portion sizes really are. Did you know that a serving of meat is generally about the size of a deck of cards? Are you used to eating a chunk of meat that is much bigger? How about pasta? One serving of pasta is only about the size of your fist, not the size of a whole plate. Do you like to munch on nuts? They are good for you so they make a great snack, just remember that one serving size of nuts will fit into a quarter-cup measuring cup.

Not understanding portion size isn't a big deal when you are eating low calorie foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, but the knowledge of portion size is crucial if you tend to eat more meats and starchy foods...and if you eat in restaurants, get a doggy bag. Restaurants frequently serve enough food on one plate to serve three people. Learn more about portion sizes and how they have gotten out of control.

Portion control at home is tough, but eating in restaurants is tougher yet.
