The Institute of Food Technologists highlights the top ten functional food trends for 2006 in their April 2006 issue of Food Technology. The functional foods industry is currently a $36 billion-a-year market, and growing as consumers become more interested in choosing foods that will not only taste good, but also help to improve their health. The trends include:
  • Reformulating children's food products
  • Reduced calorie snacks
  • Phytochemicals
  • Functional foods that have multiple benefits
  • Addition of healthy fats
  • Catering to older adults
  • Being aware of the glycemic index, grains and gluten
  • Natural-Organic foods
  • Energy boosting foods
  • Fun ideas to make eating and drinking healthy products more enjoyable
